New legal paper on Gaza urges immediate action

In a paper on international law in Gaza, the Blavatnik School’s Janina Dill and co-author Tom Dannenbaum argue that the role of law in restraining war risks being stifled by too much focus on the threshold for retrospective accountability for war crimes. They argue that, when applying the right threshold, Israel is in violation of international humanitarian law and that outside countries should suspend material assistance such as selling weapons.

Afghan women and the ICC: A test of international justice

Axana Soltan, an Afghan-American international lawyer and MPP student, argues that without enforcement, the ICC Prosecutor’s request to pursue gender persecution charges against Taliban officials risks becoming symbolic–making accountability for the Taliban’s oppression of women a crucial test for international justice.

Tackling online hate speech through content moderation

Despite being a global problem, international legal responses to hate speech have been slow-coming and patchy. One of the core international legal instruments on the matter is the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This paper builds on the United Nations work to provide more granular and well-calibrated guidance on the application of these provisions to online hate speech.

When a society’s normal functioning disadvantages entire groups of people (for example women, or precarious workers), philosophers call it ‘structural injustice’. A new book co-edited by the Blavatnik School's Professor Jonathan Wolff explores how the law can both create and address different forms of structural injustice.
