Last week 72 outstanding public servants from Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia took part in the opening week of the fifth AIG Public Leaders Programme, run by the Blavatnik School of Government in collaboration with the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation. 

The six-month programme equips high-potential African public servants with the skills and values needed to foster excellence, effectiveness and integrity in their institutions through a blend of online and in-person learning. 

Led by Professors Emily Jones and Ciaran Martin, participants will learn from leading policy experts including the Blavatnik School’s world-class faculty on topics such as negotiation, integrity in public life, and harnessing technology.  

This year’s cohort brings a wealth of experience, including: 

  • A Senior Judge in the State Council of Egypt with 15 years of progressive experience across the academic, legal, and judicial fields within the Egyptian civil service.

  • A Corporate Affairs Manager at the Electoral Commission of Zambia, who was listed among Africa’s Top 100 Career Women.

  • An Assistant Director at the Pharmacy, Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, committed to strengthening health systems, shaping evidence- based policies, and advancing leadership that delivers measurable social impact.

  • A Chief Superintendent of Customs at the Nigeria Customs Service, with expertise in trade facilitation, revenue protection, customs valuation.

  • An Assistant Director at the National Space Research and Development Agency in Nigeria, with over 17 years of experience in space science, technology, and policy. 

The programme began last week with four days of live online teaching, including with Professors Maya Tudor and Tom Simpson, Dean Ngaire Woods and Associate Professor Martin Williams. Participants are now completing their first week of self-paced study before gathering in Lagos for the residential session in mid-November.
