Thomas Hale, Professor in Public Policy (Global Public Policy) and Director of the Blavatnik School’s MPP, has been awarded the 2025 Don K. Price Award for his latest book, Long Problems.
The Don K. Price Award recognises the best book on science, technology, and politics and is awarded by the American Political Science Association. This marks the first time an academic from Oxford University has won the prize.
In Long Problems: Climate Change and the Challenge of Governing Across Time (Princeton University Press), Tom shows why we find it hard to act before a problem’s effects are felt, why our future interests carry little weight in current debates, why our institutions struggle to balance durability and adaptability, and what we can do about it all.
Tom’s success with Long Problems builds on a career already marked by his commitment to addressing some of the most challenging transnational problems effectively and fairly. He has published a number of other books including Beyond Gridlock (Polity 2017), and Between Interests and Law: The Politics of Transnational Commercial Disputes (Cambridge 2015) while also leading the Net Zero Tracker and the Climate Policy Hub.
