In an essay for the Journal of Democracy, Professor Maya Tudor examines the role of independent media in democracies experiencing erosion, comparing developments in Hungary, India, Poland and Sri Lanka. She identifies five lessons for protecting independent media: strengthening digital distribution, building networked media ecosystems, diversifying financing, developing legal defence infrastructure, and connecting institutional erosion to citizens’ everyday concerns.
