Martin Fitches has joined the Heywood Fellowship team in November 2025. Having started his career overseas, Martin has an extensive international and trade background. Most recently, co-Director for US trade policy at the Department for Business and Trade leading the UK’s response to US tariffs, he has held a range of senior trade policy roles since Brexit, including as Deputy Director of Multilateral Trade Policy and the WTO as well as leading the early design of the UK’s trade policy and negotiation of the UK’s first post-Brexit FTAs.

Previously he has held other international roles, representing the UK at the International Labour Organisation and on social affairs issues in the EU and G20 as well as holding a number of domestic policy roles.
