Stefan Dercon, Professor of Economic Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government and the Economics Department, has been elected to the British Academy’s Fellowship, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the social sciences.
The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences. This year, 92 new Fellows have been elected, joining a community of over 1,800 leading scholars across a wide range of disciplines.
In addition to his role at the Blavatnik School, Stefan is Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies and a Fellow of Jesus College. His research examines the political and economic factors that influence development outcomes, with a particular focus on Africa. Alongside his academic work, he has held senior advisory positions in the UK government.
In 2018, Stefan was appointed an honorary Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of his services to economics and international development.

Carlos Santiago Guzmán Gutiérrez, an alumnus of the Master of Public Policy and the MSc in Public Policy Research, has received the inaugural Michael Cichon Graduate Award for outstanding master’s thesis in Social Protection. The award recognises his MSc thesis, “Universal Social Protection Schemes in Forced Displacement Settings: Evidence from Colombia.”
