What is “People Power Politics”?

Popular activism is on the rise. In recent months, citizens have risen up demanding change in Tahrir Square, on Wall Street, in Moscow, Rome, Tunis, Beijing, Bahrain, Delhi, Istanbul, Sao Paolo, and elsewhere. In emerging economies rising expectations have clashed with atrophied political systems. In so-called established democracies, economic crisis, inequality, rising violence and unresponsive governments, as well as dramatic but poorly understood demographic shifts, have made publics increasingly disillusioned with governments. The result is ‘people power’ with a heady possibility that people will mobilize for more responsive and accountable government, and sobering challenges as governments seek ways to respond.

The conference is organised over the course of two days, with panel discussions, conversations and breakout sessions to explore the different themes of the conference.
