Nan Sandi has published a new article on VoxDev based on her doctoral research into whether restricting mining licences in Myanmar reduces the frequency and intensity of conflicts.
The research finds a number of positive effects when mining activity is curtailed, including armed groups having less financial incentive to fight over resource-rich territory, and local communities in marginalised areas experiencing reduced grievances which contributes to lower levels of violence. Effects are stronger in ethnic homelands, poor townships, and remote regions.
