biography

Taiki Uesugi is a government official in Japan who has worked with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW).

He graduated from the University of Tokyo in 2015, where he majored in agricultural economics.

Taiki has been interested in labour issues such as overwork and karoshi (death from overwork) in Japan since he founded a student group dedicated to taking political action to improve the Japanese labour environment. After joining the campaign for the Act Promoting Measures to Prevent Death and Injury from Overwork in 2014, Taiki resolved to join the MHLW to continue fighting overwork. He is currently responsible for leading the project team for revising the Industrial Safety and Health Act.

Taiki has also devoted himself to various civic activities outside of work. For instance, in 2019, he led GOBO, a 1500-member citizen group that has made strides in promoting Japanese food and agriculture. In the future, he will strive for labour reform that will change the harsh labour conditions in Japan.

Taiki is a Japanese Government Long-Term Fellowship Program Scholar.
