Sofía is a Chilean lawyer with a master of laws from Harvard, where she joined the Harvard Crimmigration Clinic and wrote a thesis on international agreements for the transfer of refugees to safe third countries. Before her LLM, Sofía worked at the Chilean Ministry of Interior and Public Security as a prosecutor in cases involving criminal organisations, migrant smuggling and human trafficking, and then at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights as legal advisor on key legislative bills and regulations, such as the new Penal Code for Chile and the implementation of the new Economic Crimes Law. She also worked as a part-time professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, teaching legal reasoning using the case method in criminal law. Sofía’s main interest is how criminal law affects and shapes contemporary legal problems, focusing on the intersection of criminal and immigration laws, and on policy challenges in designing a rational and principled criminal justice system.
