Sam grew up in rural North-West Tasmania, experiencing the impacts of climate change and the challenges of being queer in what was once labelled Australia's "most homophobic town." At 15, the confluence of coming out and a leadership challenge with refugees sparked a lasting passion for social justice. Before he could vote, he was a young spokesperson for same-sex marriage in Tasmania and advocated for climate action within the Labor party, later spending his gap year working in Federal Parliament. Given the partisan nature of climate politics, Sam saw business as a lever for lasting change, leading him to study economics and finance at Australian National University (ANU) with exchanges in Singapore (NUS) and Hong Kong (HKU). After graduating he joined BCG as an associate, working across its climate & sustainability, industrial goods, energy and public sector practices. Through his MPP and MSc SEE at Oxford, Sam hopes to position himself to work at the intersection of public policy and business.
