biography

Jesse Hamilton is Departmental Lecturer in Philosophy and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, where he is also Assistant Director of the Military Leadership and Judgment Programme.

His research examines how institutions exercise authority under conditions of uncertainty in national security and science policy, with particular attention to questions of democratic legitimacy and expert authority. Situated at the intersection of political philosophy and philosophy of science, he has published on artificial intelligence in defence, institutional responsibility, and the legitimacy of scientific authority, with work on community science and scientific consensus.

Before academia, Jesse served in the US Army, including with the 101st Airborne Division, as a drill sergeant, and as an embedded advisor to the Iraqi Army in Fallujah, Iraq. He subsequently transitioned to asset management, working as a financial advisor, fixed-income trader, and internal consultant focused on optimizing portfolio management and research processes.

Jesse earned his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania and was previously a Visiting Researcher at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
