biography

Ishita is a lawyer and social entrepreneur passionate about the emancipation of women and girls in vulnerable communities. Born and raised in India, she graduated from Jindal Global Law School with a BA.LLB degree. She worked for a short while in corporate law, followed by a two-year fellowship at Teach for India, where she taught 120 girls in a low-income government school in New Delhi. This experience exposed her to the harsh reality of widespread corporal punishment in the Indian schooling system and its links to domestic abuse within rural and semi-urban communities in India. To combat this issue, Ishita founded 'Kadam Lo' (translating to “take a step”), an organisation aimed at providing legal aid, skill-building opportunities, and psychological counseling to women and girls in low-income communities to fight gender violence.

Ishita is committed to understanding the current policy gaps and finding solutions to end corporal punishment and domestic abuse in India.
