Herman is from Norway, but spent the majority of his childhood and youth abroad. He went to an international school in Thailand and later studied history at the University of Cambridge, where he explored British political history, among other topics. Since returning to Norway, Herman has served in the Armed Forces as a Non-Commissioned Officer.

In line with his service background, his policy interests include foreign and security policy.
