We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of George Weidenfeld, a long time friend and supporter of the Blavatnik School of Government, and the University of Oxford.
Our Dean, Professor Ngaire Woods, said:
"George was a visionary whose scholarship scheme provided support to our students, and who, as a member of our International Advisory Board, offered us a rich stream of innovative ideas and invaluable insights. We are both honoured and grateful to have had his support for so many years. We send our heartfelt condolences to George’s family for his great loss."
Len Blavatnik said:
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the death today of my old friend George Weidenfeld. For many years he was also one of my closest advisers, and notably as the inspiration for the School of Government. All of us will miss him greatly, but his memory will live in so many ways, including in the success of the School."
The University of Oxford has published a brief statement from the Chancellor, who describes Lord Weidenfeld as "an extraordinary man...a great and generous friend...[with] limitless energy and wise advice".
We show here a photographic tribute to our friend and supporter, Lord Weidenfeld:
