This week Dr Maya Tudor, University Lecturer in Government and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, will travel to India’s capital city of New Delhi to give talks on her recently published book, The Promise of Power: The Origins of Democracy in India and Autocracy in Pakistan.
Dr Tudor will deliver lectures at three institutions in New Delhi: the Academy of International Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia University; the Centre for Policy Research; and the India International Centre. She will also have an interview with national daily The Indian Express.
Dr Tudor’s research focuses on the origins of stable, functioning democratic states across the developing world. In her book she investigates and establishes why, after independence and partition, India was able to quickly build the institutions it needed for a functioning democracy, while Pakistan lurched from one crisis to the next and finally succumbed to years of autocratic rule. At a time when elections are looming in India and engaged citizens are debating and re-interpreting the ideational foundations of Indian democracy, it is more important than ever to understand how they came to be.
Following her lecture on Monday 16 December at the Centre for Policy Research, Dr Tudor will give a recruitment talk at 5:30pm on the Blavatnik School of Government’s Master of Public Policy programme. Anyone interested in applying for the programme is encouraged to attend.
