As we wait for our new class of MPP students, this week we are busy welcoming 19 senior policymakers and government officials to the Blavatnik School of Government for our Executive Course on Oil, Gas and Mining Governance.
Coming from a variety of countries including Ethiopia, Timor Leste, Mongolia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, participants will share their own experiences and learn from each other, and will also gain insights from globally recognised experts such as Joe Amoako-Tuffour, senior adviser at the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), Jonathan Berman, author, consultant and senior advisor at Dalberg, and Philip Daniel, advisor at Fiscal Affairs Department of the International Monetary Fund.
All the activities and workshops will guide participants to learn more about the extractive sector and develop strategies to transform natural resources into sustained prosperity for their countries and people. This is the second consecutive year we host the course, which is developed thanks to a partnership with the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), a non-profit organisation that supports countries in realising the benefits of oil, gas and minerals through technical advice and research.
Daniel Kaufmann, president of NRGI, said: “Subsoil assets should be a source of shared wealth, but citizens in many countries rich in oil, gas, minerals have yet to benefit from them. With this course senior government officials will learn about how to manage extractive resources and will be better placed to shape effective, sustainable and fair strategies within their governments.”
Paul Collier, our Professor of Economics and Public Policy who is also teaching at the course, said: “We are pleased to be hosting this course again because we believe it is an effective tool for practitioners and policymakers from all around the world – they convene to explore a range of pressing topics such as taxation, environmental concerns, political commitment and public engagement and have access to the latest research and knowledge from our experts.”
The Executive Course on Oil, Gas and Mining governance runs from 8 September to 13 September.
