We are delighted to announce details of the Blavatnik School's 2013 Challenges of Government Conference, to be held in Oxford on 9-10 December.

'Challenges of Government: People Power Politics' is the third annual conference organised by the Blavatnik School to bring together leaders from all over the world in business, government, academia and civil society to share expertise and experience in addressing policy challenges.

The previous two conferences addressed, respectively, the themes of: ‘The Innovation Imperative’ and ‘Galvanising Growth’. This year’s event, on ‘People Power Politics', is focused on the rising phenomenon of people power and its limits. It will explore how governments, organisations and individuals have been reorganizing themselves and setting new priorities in response to a rapidly changing environment and facilitated by new communication technologies.

The past twenty years have seen an explosion of democratic accountability. It brings with it numerous risks and opportunities for a new kind of government. Social media campaigns and crowd-sourcing projects are credited with taking local challenges onto the global stage. A lone whistleblower can bring an entire government to its knees and have international communities reeling. So, how are governments responding to this new ‘demanding demos’? Have we got our priorities right in how we react to risks arising from or enflamed by the new people power?

Through our panel discussions and breakout sessions, we will take up critical questions to consider how we can reap the rewards of people power and reassess priorities to reduce the impact of its shocks and hazards. We will bring together multidisciplinary, regional and cross-sector experience to explore these challenges at the international, national and local levels.

The conference will provide a variety of opportunities for rich discussions among leading international experts from the academic, government, business and NGO sectors, as well as interactions with the audience.
