The Blavatnik School of Government has published this week the first two in a series of policy memos established to distil key messages for policymakers arising from Blavatnik School research and academic activity.

The first two memos are aimed in particular at UK policymakers. They are published to make timely links with major public policy initiatives and international meetings to take place in the coming weeks.

  1. As world leaders prepare for the G20 meeting of leaders in September 2013, ‘Global Financial Regulation: Three Challenges the G20 Must Address’ aims to provide insights into pathways for financial reform. The policy memo identifies three unresolved challenges in global financial governance and sets out six principles to help identify priorities in building a stronger, more resilient and more efficient global financial regulatory regime.

  2. Publishing More Payments: How the UK can continue to lead the international transparency debate’ provides insights into next steps for the UK, following its signed support of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) in July 2013. The policy memo identifies key areas for UK policymakers where work is still needed to improve transparency in the management of natural resources.

The first two policy memos have been produced with the support of funding from the Higher Education Funding Council’s HEIF fund, which supports knowledge exchange initiatives. They draw on the expert views contributed to the Blavatnik School’s Challenges of Government Conference, held in Oxford in December 2012.

As the Blavatnik School’s academic activity expands, it will be a key aim to develop more policy memos that draw on faculty expertise to deliver clear, succinct and timely recommendations for policymakers, both in the UK and internationally.

About the Challenges of Government Conference

On December 6-7, 2012, the Blavatnik School of Government convened leaders from government, international organizations, the private sector, civil society, and academia to discuss practical strategies for “Galvanizing Growth.” Conference partners included the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES), the World Bank, and McKinsey & Co., with the Financial Times as a media partner.

The goal of the conference was to share and analyse the policies, strategies, and tactics governments can adopt to galvanize growth. In this period of grave economic challenges, policymakers need practical, concrete solutions to this most fundamental dilemma.
