The Blavatnik School of Government had a busy time at the World Economic Forum in Davos this year, with Dean Ngaire Woods attending the annual meeting of heads of state, advisors, business leaders and charity representatives.
Professor Woods was interviewed on Forum Live by Tanya Beckett, where she discussed the role of the G20 in holding governments' collective feet to the fire over the implementation of post-crisis regulatory reforms. Since the crisis, some countries have started down the road of protectionism, she said, but it is best to avoid this temptation. The G20 can help ensure that markets remain open and free. Professor Woods also moderated a discussion on 'The Future of Globalisation', part of the Global Agenda Outlook 2013 report. Former Australian Prime Minister and current Member of Parliament Kevin Rudd and World Trade Organisation Director-General Pascal Lamy participated, discussing the benefits and costs of globalisation, how to mitigate its inherent inequalities, as well as technological interconnectedness and cybersecurity and whether the G20 can deliver on climate change. Prime Minister David Cameron gave a special address at the Forum on Britain's agenda for its G8 Presidency this year, setting out his views on what he called the three Ts: trade, tax and transparency. Explaining the need for a sufficient tax base in order to keep overall tax rates low, he cited the work of Blavatnik School economist Paul Collier, who is advising the Government on its G8 agenda.
