Edison Broce Urriola (MPP 2015), a Member of Parliament in Panama, has passed an environmental bill to reduce single-use plastics in the country from 2021. The bill, which Edison began working on in 2018, bans the use of ten highly consumed plastic items, as well as prohibiting replacement of these items with alternatives made from plastic-derived materials.
In addition, the bill's remit covers environmental education and fiscal incentives to: 1) encourage investment in recycling plants and industrial processing of waste and composting; and 2) encourage businesses to develop more eco-friendly operating models.
