China’s economic imbalances have been in the headlines, appearing as major points of friction between China and other major economies. Yet the phenomenon is not well understood.

In this lecture, Professor Huang will delve into the complex causes behind China’s economic imbalances, and suggest some potential pathways for resolution. He will then discuss what the implications are for China’s relations with its major economic partners, for the global trading system, and prospects for growth.

Join Professor Huang, Dean of the National School of Development at Peking University, to mark the first of the 2026 - 2027 China Lecture Series hosted by Yeling Tan, Professor of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government. Dean Huang will give his lecture on China’s economic imbalances and implications for the world, followed by discussant comments by David Lubin, Michael Klein Senior Research Fellow in the Global Economy and Finance Programme at Chatham House.

Speaker biographies

Yiping Huang is Peking University Boya Distinguished Professor, Dean of the National School of Development, Dean of the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development and Director of the Institute of Digital Finance, Peking University. In March 2024, he was reappointed as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the People's Bank of China. In April 2026, he was invited to join the Group of Thirty (G30). Currently he is also a member of the Hong Kong Exchange and Clearing's Mainland China Advisory Group, a member of the China Finance 40 Forum, a member of the China Economists 50 Forum, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Society of Finance and Banking, Chairman of the Special Committee on Fintech Development and Research of the National Internet Finance Association of China, an Associate Editor of Asian Economic Policy Review.

David Lubin is the Michael Klein Senior Research Fellow in the Global Economy and Finance Programme where he focuses on China, and on economic policy in developing and advanced economies. Before joining Chatham House, he was managing director and head of emerging markets economics at Citi, an American bank, where he was responsible for a team of some 30 economists in 15 locations globally.

Yeling Tan is Professor of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government. She is also a non-resident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Her research focuses on the political economy of globalisation, development, and policymaking, with a focus on China and the Asian region. Prior to joining Oxford, Professor Tan was an assistant professor of political science at the University of Oregon and a postdoctoral research fellow at Princeton University. She has also worked in the public and non-governmental sectors on a range of issues including economic development, international security policy, global governance and governance innovations.
