The breakneck speed at which Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing creates both novel opportunities and unprecedented challenges for governments around the world. The responses from China, one of the world’s leaders on AI innovation and on the deployment of AI in industrial, social, and public systems, will have profound implications for the rest of the world.
Join us for a wide-ranging discussion on the state of AI governance in China today, with leading experts from China’s Tsinghua University and Oxford University.
Sharing their insights and perspectives from China will be Professor Xufeng Zhu, Dean of Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management, and Professor Tianhao Chen, Director of the School’s Center for Law and Governance. Dean Zhu and Professor Chen will be joined by Professor Philippa Webb from the Blavatnik School of Government, who will discuss the Oxford Institute for Technology and Justice’s AI Justice Atlas, and Professor Robert Trager, Co-Director of the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative and International Governance Lead at the Centre for the Governance of AI. The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Professor Yeling Tan from the Blavatnik School.
Dean Zhu’s research interests include public policy theories, think tanks and expert participation, sustainable development, and science & technology governance; Professor Chen’s research covers administrative law, the rule of law in government, AI legislation, and governance of AI agents. He contributed to the drafting of versions 2.0 and 3.0 of the Artificial Intelligence Model Law, which were released globally in multiple languages. Professor Webb leads the Oxford Institute for Technology and Justice’s work on harnessing technology, including AI, to enhance access to justice, accountability and the advancement of international law. Professor Trager is a recognized expert in the international governance of emerging technologies, diplomatic practice, institutional design, and technology regulation. He regularly advises government and industry leaders on these topics.
