International financial institutions and legal reform
The EBRD Experience
Join Michel Nussbaumer, Director of the Legal Transition Programme at the EBRD, and Philippa Webb, Professor of Public International Law at the Blavatnik School, for a conversation on the EBRD's role in driving legal and policy reforms.
The discussion will explore how adopting laws and regulations, introducing new practices, advancing policy dialogue, and building institutional capacity, particularly in Ukraine, Moldova, Uzbekistan, and the West Bank, support the transition of EBRD countries of operations towards a fully functional market economy.
Please note, this event takes place in person only.
Michel Nussbaumer is the Director of the Legal Transition Programme at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In this role, he leads a team of lawyers focused on legal and policy reform across 37 EBRD economies via jurisdiction-focused projects, aiming to promote an investor-friendly, transparent, and predictable legal environment. Prior to this, Michel served as Counsel for Banking Operations at the EBRD, and before that, he practiced as a commercial lawyer in Geneva, Moscow, and London.
Philippa Webb is Professor of Public International Law at the Blavatnik School of Government and a Fellow of Exeter College. Her research spans international dispute settlement and human rights, including fair trials, free speech, and the prohibition of genocide and modern slavery. She is a member of the Board of the Clooney Foundation for Justice, the Public International Law Advisory Panel of the British Institute of International & Comparative Law, and an advisor to the American Law Institute’s Restatement of the Foreign Relations Law of the United States.
