This address by Lord Hague of Richmond, Chancellor of the University of Oxford, will inaugurate the Calleva-Airey Neave Global Security Seminar Series. Drawing on his extensive experience in international relations and security, Lord Hague will navigate the intricate terrain of contemporary global security challenges.

The lecture will provide reflections on the trajectory of global security from the end of the Cold War to the present, offering perspectives on the UK's evolving role in an increasingly interconnected and volatile world. It will highlight the ways in which great power competition, extremism, disruptive technologies, and hybrid threats are reshaping the global security landscape.

Lord Hague’s address seeks to catalyse informed discussion, encouraging academic and policy communities to deepen their engagement with the critical security dilemmas of our time.

The Rt Hon Lord Hague of Richmond, William Hague, is the Chancellor of Oxford University. He served for 26 years in the British House of Commons until he stood down in 2015. In that time, he served in many senior roles, including Leader of the House of Commons, but is best known as the Leader of the Conservative party, 1997-2001, and First Secretary of State and Foreign Secretary, 2010-2014. He now pursues a wide range of business and charitable activities, and is a well-known writer of historical biographies and a columnist of The Times. In April 2024 Lord Hague became Chair of Hakluyt’s International Advisory Board
