About the speaker

Arvind Subramanian is an Indian economist and served as the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India between 2014 and 2018. In his role as Chief Economic Adviser, he is credited with substantially revamping the Economic Survey of India (the Ministry of Finance's flagship annual document), introducing a focus on issues previously never covered, such as gender, child welfare and water, as well the idea of a Universal Basic Income in India. Arvind has also worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Center for Global Development (all in Washington DC) and he is a widely cited expert on the economics of India, China, and the changing balance of global economic power.

After his undergraduate education in economics at St Stephen's College, Delhi, Arvind obtained MPhil and DPhil degrees from the University of Oxford as an Inlaks Scholar. He is the author of two books, India's Turn: Understanding the Economic Transformation (2008) and Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China's Economic Dominance (2011), and co-author of Who Needs to Open the Capital Account? (2012). He is also a frequent contributor to publications such as the Financial Times and Business Standard. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine named him one of the world's top 100 global thinkers.
