Electoral integrity in Africa: Lessons from Nigeria's 2011 and 2015 elections
An event with Professor Attahiru Jega, the inaugural Africa Initiative for Governance Visiting Fellow of Practice.
Although democratization is gaining a foothold in Africa, poorly conducted elections have posed remarkable constraints, with dire consequences for stability, regime legitimacy and good, democratic governance, especially in countries with complex diversity. Increasing the scope of electoral integrity has therefore become central to the concern for democratic consolidation in Africa.
In this presentation, drawing from his experience as Nigeria’s chief electoral Commissioner (2010-2015), with the 2011 and especially 2015 general elections being hailed as the best elections in Nigeria’s history, Professor Attahiru Jega reviews the efforts being made to improve electoral integrity, highlights the challenges and draws lessons for other African countries.
